Three Generations Serving Teesdale Since 1958

What started with one tractor and a wagon in 1958 has grown into a trusted local business serving farms, builders, and homeowners across Teesdale and County Durham. We're still family-run, still based in Cotherstone, and still believe that doing good work for local people matters most.

Our Story

How It Started

In 1958, when our parents got married, they set off with an old tractor and one wagon. That was the beginning of Gill & Son Haulage. Like many businesses in Teesdale back then, it started small and grew slowly through hard work and building trust with local customers.

Building the Business

Our father started it, then his brother joined, then the next generation came into the business. Over the decades, we've added trucks, equipment, and services, but the core approach hasn't changed - do good work, treat people fairly, and be there when local farms and businesses need you.

Three Generations Later

Today, we're still family-run and still based in Teesdale. We've grown from that single tractor to a fleet of trucks, modern agricultural machinery, and specialist tarmacing equipment. Around 21 people work with us now, many of them local to the area and some who've been with us for years.

What We Stand For

Local Relationships Matter

After 65+ years in Teesdale, we often work for families we've known for decades. That responsibility keeps our standards high. When your grandfather used us, then your father, now you - that's a reputation we protect.

Flexibility and Hard Work

If we can help, we will. That's been our approach since 1958. Whether it's getting materials to a site the same day, working long hours during good weather for hay, or finding a way to solve an access problem, we'll do our best to make it work.

Honest Dealing

We prefer working with people we know or who come recommended. We give realistic prices, honest advice about ground conditions or timing, and stand behind our work. After 65 years, we've learned that good relationships make successful projects.

Own Everything In-House

Unlike many contractors who hire equipment or subcontract work, we own our trucks, tractors, rollers, and specialist equipment. We employ our team directly. This means better control over quality, timing, and costs - and true accountability when we're working for you.

Our Team

Our drivers know the local roads, our agricultural operators understand upland farming, and our tarmac team handle everything from domestic driveways to airport car parks.

Experience matters in this work, and we're fortunate to have skilled, reliable people who take pride in doing their jobs properly.
